Karen Montoya's Background

Karen Montoya began her journey in public service in 1991 at the Bernalillo County Assessor's Office, where she dedicated thirteen years to honing her skills and expertise.

In 2004, Karen served as a Senior Appraiser with the New Mexico State Property Tax Division, where her dedication to fair valuation practices and accurate assessments earned her respect and recognition within the field. During her time with the New Mexico State Property Tax Division, she assumed the role of Chair of the County Valuation Protest Board, ensuring fair and transparent resolution of valuation disputes and further demonstrating her commitment to serving the community.

Karen then served as the Bernalillo County Assessor from 2007 to 2013, becoming the first woman elected to this position. During her tenure, she led initiatives to modernize operations and ensure fair property assessments for all residents, leaving a legacy of integrity and transparency.

In 2013, Karen was elected to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) and served as Commissioner until 2017. As PRC Commissioner, she passionately advocated for consumer rights and championed sustainable energy solutions, making significant contributions to the community at large.

Now, as a candidate for Bernalillo County Clerk, Karen is determined to continue her legacy of integrity, transparency, and unwavering dedication. She envisions a future where the County Clerk's office operates with efficiency and accessibility, meeting the evolving needs of the community while upholding the highest standards of service.

Running for Bernalillo County Clerk allows me to leverage my expertise and leadership skills to ensure transparent, accessible, and efficient governance for our community. Retirement has given me the opportunity to focus wholeheartedly on this mission, and I am excited to embark on this journey to contribute to the betterment of our county.
